ALBAWABA – Former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has been pictured for what are thought to be the first time inside the US detention facility where he is being held in Brooklyn, New York.
The images, released Sunday, August 30, on Maduro’s official social media accounts showed him in gray prison clothes posing in front a concrete wall. One picture shows him smiling and flashing the victory sign with his hand.
But the date stamped on the images indicates they were taken on June 25, 2026, although the pictures were published today.
Maduro’s message to the fans
The photos were accompanied by a note addressed to Maduro’s family, grandchildren and supporters.”
In the post, the former Venezuelan leader said he and his wife, Cilia Flores, were strong, and thanked the support and solidarity they had received.
The look is a rare glimpse of Maduro since his detention in the United States. Little has been known about his daily life inside the facility.
Brooklyn Jail
Maduro is being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, where his wife also is being held. The couple were captured in a US military operation in Venezuela in January and were then flown to New York.
Maduro has denied the federal charges and dismissed the allegations. His legal case is still ongoing, with his trial set for June 2027. Questions about his legal status and possible immunity as a former head of state are likely to be heard in a separate hearing.
First glimpse since his arrest
The release of the photos has generated substantial interest, because very little has been known in the public sphere about Maduro’s life in prison.
In the images, Maduro is smiling and making the victory sign, not looking distressed, and he uses the message that accompanies them to reassure his supporters of his determination.
The photos provide a rare glimpse of the former Venezuelan president in custody, but also a glimpse into how Maduro is presenting himself to the public as he faces a major legal battle in the United States.
