ALBAWABA- U.S. President Donald Trump met behind closed doors at the White House on Wednesday with top U.S. national security officials, including CIA Director John Ratcliffe, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Dan Caine, shortly after Ratcliffe returned from a rare and unannounced visit to Moscow.
The meeting brought together three of the administration’s most senior intelligence and military officials at a sensitive moment for U.S. foreign policy. The meeting came shortly after Ratcliffe returned from his Moscow visit.
Meanwhile, Deputy Under Secretary of Defense for Policy Elbridge Colby is due in Brussels on Thursday for talks with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and alliance ambassadors. The rapid succession of high-level meetings comes amid heightened tensions on NATO’s eastern flank and growing diplomatic activity following Ratcliffe’s Moscow mission.
Ratcliffe’s presence was particularly significant following his visit to Moscow on Tuesday, where he held talks with Russian intelligence officials. The Kremlin confirmed Wednesday that Ratcliffe met with Russian security and intelligence counterparts but did not meet President Vladimir Putin. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Putin was briefed on the outcome of the meetings.
Ratcliffe’s Moscow trip was the first publicly known visit by a CIA director to Russia since William Burns traveled there in 2021. The visit came amid stalled efforts to end the Russia-Ukraine war and heightened speculation over the purpose of the unusually high-level intelligence contact. Washington had reportedly informed Kyiv that a senior U.S. delegation would be traveling to Moscow and asked Ukraine to temporarily suspend strikes on Moscow and other Russian targets while the delegation was there.
Trump sought to downplay the significance of the trip on Wednesday, describing it as “semi-routine” while suggesting that it could nevertheless produce results. He said his administration was working to end the war in Ukraine and rejected speculation that Ratcliffe had traveled to Moscow to address possible Russian moves against NATO or newly imposed U.S. sanctions on Iran. Asked about those theories, Trump said, “None of the above.”
The White House meeting also comes against the backdrop of the prolonged U.S.-Israeli conflict with Iran and Washington’s expanding economic pressure on Tehran. Hegseth and Caine have been central to U.S. military planning and operational decisions related to the conflict, while Russia maintains close strategic ties with Iran.
Diplomatic efforts involving Iran have continued alongside the military confrontation. Pakistan has sought to facilitate dialogue between Washington and Tehran, with Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir recently visiting Tehran and meeting senior Iranian officials. The Strait of Hormuz and the prospects for renewed negotiations have remained major issues in regional diplomacy.
